Inclusive Education for the Hair World
June is Pride Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by supporting those who advocate for inclusivity.
A proud advocate for the LGBTQIA2S+ community, Jamie DiGrazia of Logan Parlor Salon and Barber in the Logan Square area of Chicago is an award-winning business owner, stylist, and educator. She chose a career path in the beauty industry so that she could bring positivity and self-assurance to every individual through her passion for hairdressing.
“After years of practicing inclusivity, it became unequivocally clear that the happiness of my clients, along with my own creativity, thrived most when individuality was respected, emotional safety supported, and a state of mutual trust was established,” said Jamie. “It’s with this learning experience that I began formalizing an inclusive education business model and gender-free service menu to share with the industry called HAIR HAS NO GENDER™️.”
What began as a personal practice to a human-first approach to hairdressing has since evolved into a complete training curriculum and community resource designed to lead a progressive movement within the professional beauty industry on behalf of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, next generation and beyond.
HAIR HAS NO GENDER™ offers professional education and business tools that advocate, respect, and support the well-being of all genders and identities through a human-first approach to the business of hairdressing. It starts with gender-free pricing and developing a service menu, practices, techniques, and a gender-affirming mindset that allows salon businesses to operate at a higher level of social awareness and creative expression.
Jamie knows that education alone is not enough to create change. The HAIR HAS NO GENDER™ Service Finder has also launched this year as a way to maximize the visibility of service providers committed to making a more conscious effort to practice inclusivity. Once a business has completed training, they have the option to take the HAIR HAS NO GENDER™ Professional Pledge to Inclusivity and have their shop listed on the service finder map. Their listing will let people know where to find inclusive beauty and grooming services and safe spaces to explore new identities through hair services.
“Gender-free pricing and gender-affirming consultations are a must in our industry,” added Jamie. “Gender is a social construct anyway – and as a creator, there is no room for that.”
Today, Jamie takes pride in HAIR HAS NO GENDER™’s progression, expanded offering, and accessibility to service providers committed to making inclusive adaptations to their businesses.
“Together, let’s usher in a new era of change for all individuals touched by our industry.”
